Scandivanian Study Links ADHD to Tylenol Use in Pregnancy

The over diagnosing of ADHD (and I do think it’s over dx out of convenience) has many causes but could some of it be attributable to acetaminophen use during pregnancy? A Scandinavian study has found a possible connection.

Children whose mothers took acetaminophen while pregnant had up to a 40 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with ADHD, according to the research, which involved more than 64,000 Danish mothers and their children. The kids were born between 1996 and 2002.”

I recall attending a pharmacology conference about 5 years ago and the PharmD that did one of the talks said that if Tylenol (acetaminophen) were fresh out of the labs for marketing today it would be by prescription only. Yes — prescription! So next time you pop a few APAP remember that it’s a potent little pill.
